My story begins in 1978 when I decided – not intentionally – to wrap my motorbike around a lamppost, which resulted in some major fractures to my right leg, a six month stay in hospital and a further twelve month period of relative inactivity whilst I learnt to walk again. Add to this a predilection for beer, crisps and fish suppers and I suddenly found that I’d gained nearly 25kg (4stones). Needless to say I was not happy about this situation so I joined a gym and hence began my life in the Health & Fitness industry; oddly enough, more that 35 years later, I’m still in it.
Since then I’ve spent tens of thousands of hours both training and teaching. I’ve lifted more weights than I care to think about, ran for immeasurable miles and miles, as well as spending countless hours in both the dojo and boxing ring. I can’t really remember a time when I wasn’t doing something that was energetic, exhausting (and usually painful) but also extremely fulfilling – I like a challenge.
I also read a lot about exercise and nutrition too; I’m one of those people that just have to work out the most efficient way of doing something and it’s this ingrained drive for near-perfection that keeps me pushing forward. Hence, I study the real science of my trade intensely (not the drivel that’s put out by magazines), continually updating what I know in order to provide the best information possible to my clients. Thankfully, the passion for my profession shows no signs of diminishing.
Training and teaching is not just something that I do, it’s what I am.
